HEART FULL OF SOUL
by Krishna Das
$20.95, 2 CDs. Nutone. October 2008.

isbn 9780010068801     2 hours 20 minutes

It was Krishna Das’s desire to create a record that would allow people to immerse themselves in a night of kirtan. Heart Full of Soul fulfills that vision, transporting audiences into a full live concert experience. It was recorded in 2007.

Night after night, in ashrams and temples, cavernous cathedrals and modest community theaters around the world, Krishna Das sits down behind his harmonium, flanked by his band of supporting musicians, greets the crowd that has gathered to sing, closes his eyes, and begins. And with his opening Om, everyone in the room sets off together on a priceless evening’s journey along the path of devotion.

Heart Full of Soul is a double-CD recording of just such an evening and just such a journey. It is rich with the burnished treasure of the Divine Name, passed back and forth, back and forth between KD and the audience, as they travel together the varied terrain of the heart: from the funky rhythms of “Radhe Radhe Shyam” through the intense longing of “All One (Hare Krishna)” and the balm of “Jaya Bhagavan,” and ending with KD’s joyous version of the gospel classic, “Jesus on the Main Line”—a beloved concert chestnut here on CD at last.

I have been singing these chants for many years and with every day they get deeper and more powerful as the beauty and mystery of the Name unfold. May the blessings of all the Saints and Sages always be with us and by their blessings may we be strong enough in that love to carry ourselves and others through all of life’s hard stuff.Sarva Mangalam

Krishna Das has been called the “chant master of American Yoga” by The New York Times, and the “Pavarotti of Kirtan” by Yoga Journal. His uniquely heartful, gravelly Brooklyn voice is accompanied, at various points, by Ty Burhoe on tabla, Arjun Bruggeman on drums, Mark Gorman on bass, Steve Ross on harmony vocals, David Nichtern on electric guitar, Genevieve Walker on violin, and Nina Rao on finger cymbals.
