Rumi, the great bard of Sufism, was born in Persia in 1211. He became one the greatest poets and spiritual thinkers of his era, composing thousands of poems that continue to be chanted on pilgrimages, at religious ceremonies, and in heart-circles near and far. He is considered to be the greatest spiritual poet in world history, and has lately become the most popular single poet in North America.  A celebrated mystic, Rumi founded the Mevlevi order, which spread throughout the Islamic world after his death in 1273 and is still active around the world today.
