August 2017

August brings eclipse season, which generally happen in pairs twice a year. However, on August 21st, much of North America will be treated to a total solar eclipse, and it is the first time on this continent since 1918 that the US will have been in what is called the “path of totality”. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the earth and the Sun, obscuring the Sun from our perspective on earth. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun’s thus blocking out all sunlight and turning light into dark. It will begin on the west coast (Victoria) at 9:06 am (PDT), peak at 10:20 and end at 11:37 am. From our perspective on the west coast we will see the eclipse at 89% of total darkness. Please check local times for other areas.

This total solar eclipse occurs at 28 degrees and 53 minutes of Leo. If you are born near the end of any of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius), or near the beginning of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces) you may feel this eclipse in a more personal way. There has been much talk about Trump and his regime crumbling in some way on or near this eclipse. Perhaps. Either way, be prepared to see dramatic events unfold on the world stage.

Eclipses often mark important turning points, and happen in pairs coinciding with the new and full moon, usually four times a year. They have often been likened to a turbo-charged new or full Moon, and are known to bring change, sometimes very quickly, and are accompanied by a feeling of acceleration particularly if an eclipse is occurring within a five-degree orb of your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or an angle in your chart, such as your Ascendant. The closer to the exact degree an eclipse happens to an inner planet in your chart, the more dramatic the turning point.  Eclipses can reveal hidden information, open new solutions to old issues, or clear the decks for a brand new, often unexpected path. They often mark significant events, and usually coincide with a certain door closing, but simultaneously opening another.  The effects of an eclipse can often be felt weeks or even months to come. Look to what house, (or, life area) this upcoming eclipse will transit in your chart, even though it may not be coming close to a planet or angle, this will provide clues as to what part of your life may be up for a shift. Remember that eclipses energy and happenings can occur before the actual eclipse, or in the days that proceed it.

While the upcoming total solar eclipse is generating the most attention, on August 7th the gateway to eclipse season opens with the full Moon and a lunar eclipse at 15 degrees and 25 minutes of Aquarius. Those born near the middle of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) will be more likely to feel this on a subjective level. It is also the full Moon in Aquarius, bringing up Aquarian themes: social justice, radical inclusivity, humanitarian issues, and the voice of The People against the Establishment, particularly highlighting the ways the establishment is not working for the good of all. This full Moon will highlight where there is a need for change. It’s on. The time is here. Aquarius is connected to revolution, evolution and speaking the truth, consequences be damned. On a personal level, an Aquarius full Moon can be just what you need to break out of old patterns that no longer serve your highest good, and take the first steps toward a new way of being in the world.  A beneficent trine from Jupiter suggests people coming together to push through a new initiative. Community. Tribe. Jupiter’s connection to this full Moon also buoys us up. Lends some optimism in this turbulent time. Something may be revealed. An answer is given, or the way forward becomes clear.

On August 3rd, Uranus stations retrograde, and although this is not altogether an uncommon occurrence, and the outer planets’ retrogrades are not felt in as subjective a way as Mercury or Venus, it still figures into the cosmic signature of the times. Uranus is about freedom, liberation and breaking away from the status quo. Although its energy will be internalized until January 2018, be aware to internal promptings and sudden breakthroughs and realizations.

Mercury stations retrograde on August 12th until September 5th. Be prepared for the usual Mercury retrograde slow downs, such as mixed up communications and appointments. If you can, wait to buy new tech items, cars, bikes etc. and hold off on making travel plans. Same goes for signing contracts: if you can wait, then do. If not, read the fine print and be aware that things will probably need to be renegotiated or fine tuned down the road.

The Sun enters Virgo on August 22nd at 3:21 pm. Happy birthday Virgo! We all have every sign somewhere in our birth charts, and wherever Virgo is in your chart, is the area in which you will experience this energy for the next month. Virgo is a mutable earth sign, meaning that it is a sign that is a threshold that bridges one season into the next, and resonates with the grounding element of earth. Virgo is summer transitioning into autumn: there is a subtle shift. Harvest season is beginning, and the flurry of activity reminds us that we are preparing for a new turn of the Wheel. The Virgo personality is often said to be analytical, discerning, and as having an innate ability to excel at organizational activities. Virgo is associated with ritual, and Virgo appreciates a daily spiritual practice. There is a deep body/mind connection with Virgo, and you can find many with Virgo strong in their charts working in service in the health and healing professions as doctors, nutritionists, yoga teachers, and holistic practitioners.  Health and care of the body are all Virgo obsessions. Virgo is also the craftsperson, using their attention to detail to produce beautiful and useful works of art.

Venus enters Leo on August 25th, bringing verve, creativity and romance into relationship, and all that we do. Mercury also enters Leo on August 31st, as it prepares for its direct station on September 5th, right on time for back to school.
