Astrological highlights by Danielle Blackwood
Scorpio season is finally over. Don’t get me wrong, I love Scorpio, in fact, I myself have Scorpio rising. I love the deep, mysterious opportunities for transformation, and the propensity of Scorpio to always peer beneath the surface. But, Scorpio is also the archetype of death and endings. There really is no way around it. Scorpio is an intense, extreme, hard-truths sign. It brings some of the deepest, darkest stuff in the human condition to the surface, and then asks, “Now what are you going to do”?
It is said that the next sign in the zodiac always corrects the excesses of the sign before it, and along came Sagittarius on November 22nd, where it will stay until Winter Solstice, to try and make some sense out of the stuff that was unearthed while the Sun made its yearly transit through Scorpio. (Check out November’s column for more on Sagittarius). And let’s face it, so much has come to the surface over the past month, that we need the broader perspective that Sagittarius offers. We need to find our joy, and not be pulled down into the murky waters of blind faith and black-or-white reactions.
Venus in Scorpio: Sexual Healing
Although the Sun is now out of Scorpio, Venus, the archetype of love, connection, and values moves into Scorpio from December 4th until the 29th. Yes, traditional Astrology says Venus is in her detriment in this sign, but as always we must look for the highest expression of any Astrological placement, and continue to evolve towards deeper understanding. In Scorpio, we can do some real depth work in our relationships now. If we are courageous, we can do some serious healing and transformation of our most intimate connections. Pool your resources, and remember that if you choose to invest emotionally in the right someone, you have more to draw from as a team. On the shadow side, Venus in Scorpio can dredge up fears, trust issues, and the shadier side of sex. Remember that Scorpio has as its emblem not only the Scorpion, but the Phoenix, the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes and rebirths itself anew, time and again. With Venus in Scorpio, we also touch the hem of the great myth of Inanna, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, who descends to the Underworld, and after her trials, crosses the threshold back to the topside world, tempered and reborn.
The week of December 6th to 10th has the potential to stir up some intense energy. The best way to use it is to push something important through to its next level. Persevere and see it through. Mars squares Pluto on the 6th; it could be one of those days where having that courageous conversation might be incredibly tough but cleansing and re-setting. Cardinal signs born around the middle of the sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) might feel especially stressed by the aspects this week. World events can also be fraught with extra tension. Let’s hope world leaders keep their cool, and use their heads. The 10th delivers Mars opposite Uranus, expect the unexpected, and keep your feet. The Universe is not without mercy however, and we get a sparkling trine from the Sun to Uranus on the 8th, and a lovely Venus trine Neptune on the 10th, adding some brilliant insight, fun surprises and romantic bliss along the way.
Mercury into Capricorn: Defining What Is
Mercury ingresses into Capricorn on December 9th, and we may find our dealings with others to be more cautious and practical than usual. Everything needs to have a rhyme and a reason. This is a good time to consolidate, get realistic, and make money. Use this time to make progress at work, in business and creating foundations that are built to last. Mercury moves into Aquarius on January 1st -but head’s up – the planet of communication and travel goes retrograde on January 5th.
New Moon in Sagittarius: Begin Your Own Hero’s Journey
The New Moon this month is on December 11th, in Sagittarius – a time to reflect on what new seeds of intent you will plant in your life. The themes of this New Moon will highlight adventure, higher learning, publishing, the Quest, the Hero’s Journey, and the exploration of other cultures, religions, philosophies and perspectives. This is a great time to plan a pilgrimage trip. This is the sign that sparks the idea to set off for India; to walk the Camino, or to embark on a life-changing sojourn through Ireland.
Winter Solstice: Happy Birthday Capricorn, and the Rebirth of the Sun
The Sun enters Capricorn on December 21st, at 8:49 pm (PST) 11:49 pm (EST). For Sun sign Capricorns, happy birthday! This is your personal New Year, and your time to celebrate! This moment marks the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. And, after that magical rebirth in the darkest night, we celebrate the return of the lengthening days. Look to see where Capricorn is in your chart to find out where you will be experiencing this energy. We all have every sign somewhere in our birth charts, and wherever Capricorn is in your chart, is the area in which you will experience this energy for the next month. Capricorn is a Cardinal Earth sign, meaning that it is one of the signs that marks an astronomical turning point, in this case Winter Solstice, and resonates with the practical, goal oriented principle of the Earth element. Capricorn is the archetype of the “Senex” - the Wise Old Man, the Sage, or the Elder in Jungian parlance. Capricorn also encompasses the Crone, or the Wisewoman archetype. Saturn rules this Earth sign, and Capricorn has an intimate understanding of the gifts of practicality, hard work, and above all, perseverance.
All I Want for Christmas is a Full Moon in Cancer
Christmas day this year will truly be all about family, and family of the heart. The Moon is full in the sign of Cancer, underlining themes of family, heritage, traditions, emotional bonding, food and nurturance, and the hearth. Neptune in Pisces and Venus in Scorpio form a Grand Water Trine with the Full Moon, and things could get emotional, although that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The water element highlights feelings, connection, relationships, ancestral ties and love. Expect to be wrapped up in a cozy blanket of nostalgia and memories. Get out the old photo albums and the tissues. Personally, I’m quite sure there will be moments of emotional overwhelm for me. I get to see my son for the first time in a year and a half! (He moved to Montreal where he is sharing his talents with the world as an amazing and creative chef). So, I am looking forward to happy reunions and plenty of tears all around. Venus makes a pleasant sextile to Jupiter on Christmas Eve, suggesting high spirits and luxurious enjoyment, and on the 25th, Jupiter and Mercury make a happy trine, so there will be lots of sparkling conversation, liveliness and a feeling of abundance this holiday season. Uranus also goes direct on Christmas day, so there may also be some unexpected news or a surprise of some sort in the works.
On the west coast, the Moon is freshly in Libra for New Year’s Eve (as of 10:41 pm) Enjoy socializing and entertaining in gracious and beautiful surroundings. If you decide to celebrate the New Year at home, make sure you have a good bottle of wine, and whatever tidbits that spell luxury to you. Libra appreciates the refined, lovely, and harmonious, so raucous parties might only feel jarring. Since Libra is also the sign of the “couple’, you might opt to skip the socializing and ring in a romantic New Year with your lover or spouse instead. East Coaster’s are still under the Virgo Moon at the stroke of midnight, so a quiet introspective evening will feel right.
Happy Solstice! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukah!
May all beings be happy and at peace!
