January 2018

We begin the year with no less than five planets in Capricorn by January 10th, calling up themes of accountability, commitment, mastery and milestones. 2018 is an initiation year. Goal setting, a sound game plan and plenty of persistence can shape your dreams into reality, but nothing will come without effort, and the courage to see things as they are, not as you wish them to be. With Saturn’s recent ingress into the sign of Capricorn – where it will be until 2020 – we are all called to be the best version of ourselves. Anything based on fantasy or wishful thinking will be replaced with accountability and hard work. Fighting will be futile. You have free will to do what you will, but do know that whatever you do, there will be consequences. Obviously, this can work both ways. If you step up to the plate and do what needs to be done, you will reap the rewards. If you decide to while away the time making excuses, or cutting corners, you will pay the price. Saturn in Capricorn is quite simple really. A reminder of the immutable law of cause and effect.
If you have inner planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) or points, (ascendant, midheaven, nodes) in a cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) you will feel the tempering energy of Saturn in Capricorn in an immediate way sometime between now and 2020. If you have any inner planets or points between 0 and 11 degrees of any of the cardinal signs, you’ll be feeling the Saturnian shaping process this year. If your planets or points are between 12 and 29 degrees, you will be experiencing this energy in 2019-2020.
Saturn Return

Every 29.5 years, Saturn returns to the same place by degree and sign as when you were born. If you were born when Saturn was in Capricorn, you will experience this threshold crossing between now and 2020. This is one of the most shaping and important rites of passage in your life. Although it can be a time of paring down anything that doesn’t serve your growth, it can also be a time of defining who you are and crystalizing your life’s purpose. There are two groups: those in their late 20’s, and those in their late 50’s.
You will be having your Saturn Return between now and 2020 if you were born:
Jan 6th 1959 – Jan 3rd 1962
Feb 14th 1988 – June 10th 1988
Nov 13th 1988 – Feb 6th 1991
2018 begins with two Full Moons bookending the month of January. A month with two Full Moons is called a “blue Moon”, and the one at the end of the month also has the distinction of being a total lunar eclipse, which we will be able to see on the west coast if we wake up early enough. The Full Moon/eclipse takes place at 5:27 am PT (8:27 am, ET). This Full Moon is at 11 degrees Leo, across the Leo/Aquarius axis, and is a Supermoon, which is just a trendy way of saying that this Moon is perigee, meaning that it appears bigger and brighter from our perspective on earth. Mercury ingresses into Aquarius just minutes after the eclipse, further underlining the Aquarian/Uranian themes that will accompany this Full Moon: innovative, revolutionary, paradigm shifting. The phrase ‘expect the unexpected’ resonates with this lunation. As this Full Moon is in Leo, it also brings with it themes of creativity, individuality, love, romance, pleasure, play and inspired leadership.
Backtracking a bit, Mercury enters Capricorn on January 10th until January 31st. On January 15th Jupiter sextiles Pluto, making this a good day to expand or grow something, while also going deeply into a subject, beginning a course of study, or inquiry. The 16th brings the first New Moon of the year at 26 degrees Capricorn. Find where you have this point in your chart to see what life area is the best ground for you to plant seeds that will take root and sprout over the next six months. A New Moon in Capricorn is especially good for those things connected to work, finances, right livelihood, commitment, and investment in time, energy and resources. Capricorn helps us streamline, focus and commit to the long view.
Venus enters Aquarius on January 17th which adds some perspective and lightness to the serious Capricorn line up. The tide is beginning to turn with Venus’ ingress into this sign, and on the 19th the Sun leaves the sober territory of Capricorn ushering in Aquarius season. Happy birthday Aquarius! This is your personal New Year. We all have every sign somewhere in our birth charts, and wherever Aquarius is in your chart, is the area in which you will experience this energy for the next month. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, meaning it is a sign that embodies the heart of a season (in this case winter) and resonates with the element of Air, which represents the realm of the mind, logic, language, and the internet, amongst other principles. Ruled by Uranus, the planet that has the distinction of being discovered by surprise, Aquarius is the Truth Teller, The Wild Card, the Revolutionary. Aquarius shakes up the status quo and shifts paradigms with its radical ideals and ideas that shape the next collective chapter.
Mars moves into Sagittarius on the 26th, moving away from the strategic yet brooding energy of Scorpio and bringing a fiery optimism and energy to the collective. Mars represents our libido, our get up and go, and passion. Sagittarius is a comfortable place for mars, meaning that if we tap into it, we can access its clear fire and channel it into ideals that have meaning.
The Full Moon and eclipse on January 31st is a time of culmination, reaching the finish line, wrapping something up and preparing to move forward in a new direction. Look to see where you have 11 degrees of Leo, to see what life area will be highlighted for you.

Happy 2018!
