March 2016

Astrological highlights by Danielle Blackwood

March 2016

March is always accompanied by the winds of change. It is a transitional month, bridging the fluid transpersonal energies of the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces, with the beginning of the Astrological year and the fresh new cosmic start that is Aries. In March, we are in a sense, between the worlds.  This is magic time; liminal space, where all is in a state of possibility and becoming. It is cusp time, between the ending of one cycle and the beginning the next.  If you give yourself a moment to tune in, to detach and see what comes up, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the next step on your path.  Add two potent eclipses to this month, and the time is definitely ripe for change.

Mercury enters Pisces on March 5th.  The planet of communication is sensitive and intuitive in this sign. People will be feeling their way through the next three weeks.  Listen to your gut.  Pay attention to what your body is telling you through subtle cues.  Give free reign to your own creative impulses and see where the muse leads. Mars also enters Sagittarius on the 5th. Mars in Sag brings us the confidence, the courage and the sense of adventure that we need to get something important started.  Mars will be dancing between Scorpio and Sagittarius for most of 2016; this is a good year to move toward your goals with both strategy and determination, as well as the energy and heart to push the boundaries and see something through to completion.

March 8th brings a Super New Moon in Pisces and a total Solar Eclipse. What do you dream of in your secret heart of hearts? Pisces reminds us to trust the process, and let go of trying to control the outcome.  This is a time to surf the currents of inspiration, and release the need to control the direction.  New Moons are a time to seed new intentions and are powerful gateways to fresh starts.  This Pisces New Moon and Eclipse ask us to consider setting new intentions around Piscean themes: creativity, intuition, emotional and spiritual healing, and faith in the transcendent.   This is a particularly good time to begin new spiritual exploration, to read books that inspire, and to let go of the ego based need to have all the answers now.

This is a good time for a retreat, even if you can simply take out a couple of hours to meditate, contemplate or journal.  Pisces is a sensitive, inward directed archetype, and if at all possible, try not to put too much on your plate. Today offers a moment to reflect on emotional clearing, self care, and any patterns of giving too much at the expense of your own well being.  If you do find yourself habitually giving to the point where you feel like you’re playing the martyr, ask yourself what you are getting in return.  Do you need to be needed? Are you deriving a sense of identity as a person on a path of Service by neglecting your own needs? This is the shadow side of Pisces compassion, and sometimes what appears on the surface as altruistic, actually has roots that need to be examined more closely.  With all of this oceanic subjectivity, we are reminded that healthy boundaries are important.  One of Pisces’ greatest lessons is to learn how to say ‘no’.  The house in your chart where 18 Pisces falls, is the area of life that is the most fertile ground to plant your seeds of Piscean intention.

On March 12th, Venus, archetype of love, relationship, connection and resources also moves into dreamy Pisces.  This is the most romantic, creative and inspiring placement for the Goddess of Love.   Dance, write poetry, join a meditation group.  Enjoy the deep, magical currents of inspiration.  With Venus in the sign of the Siren, there is an urge to merge that can be as numinous and enveloping as it can be confusing and painted with the colors of dreams.  A good use of this energy is to take a lesson from Pisces’ opposite sign, Virgo, and put Pisces compassion to good practical use. Consider helping out at a homeless shelter, or volunteering for an animal rights organization.  Do some Pisces clearing and detachment, and donate old clothes and household goods to charity.

The Piscean tide turns, and Spring Equinox heralds the start of the Astrological year.  March 19th at 9:31 pm (PDT) marks the first day of spring, and the start of Aries season.  March 19th begins the Sun’s yearly sojourn through the sign Aries, where it will highlight the Aries part of our chart for the next 30 days.  For Sun sign Aries, happy birthday!  This is your personal New Year.  You are feeling vital and in your element.  Seize the day and make this your best year yet.  We all have every sign somewhere in our birth charts, and wherever Aries is in your chart, is the area in which you will experience this self starting, pioneering energy for the next month.  Aries is a Cardinal Fire sign, meaning that it is a sign that begins a season, in this case, spring, and resonates with the passionate, enthusiastic element of Fire.  Aries is connected to the development of courage, and those who are Sun sign Aries, or who have Aries as a dominant theme in their chart will often find themselves in situations throughout their lives that promote the cultivation of assertiveness, boldness, and a spirit of adventure.

Spring Equinox, is also known as Ostara, the Anglo-Saxon Teutonic Goddess of spring, rebirth, and new beginnings.  All of life is in a state of anticipation, and a fresh breeze is blowing away all the cobwebs of winter to prepare for a rebirth in nature, and within our own lives.  Aries refreshes our spirit and reminds us that after the long dark nights of winter, spring always comes again.  New life is infused into our deepest psyches, and we are enlivened, quickened and ready to embrace a new chapter.  Aries is The Fool in the Tarot, the newborn soul standing on the cusp of experience, about to bravely, innocently take the first steps towards individuation. Mercury bolts into Aries on the 21st, and it’s time to turn a corner, push for change, and get something off the ground.  Be bold in your communications, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.

The Full Moon on the 23rd brings a Lunar Eclipse at 3 degrees Libra. Remember that eclipses bring change.  They often coincide with dramatic or auspicious meetings, life events, and the closing of one door, followed by the opening of another.  They also seem to shine a light on a blind spot in your life, suddenly revealing what isn’t working, and showing the way forward.  Pay attention to the days leading up to an eclipse and the weeks following it.  If the eclipse happens to fall within 5 degrees on either side of one of your personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) or one of your angles, such as your Rising sign or Midheaven, you will feel the effects of a particular eclipse more immediately in your life.  For example, for this eclipse, if you are an early born Aries or Libra, you can expect to come into a profound upcoming shift in your life in some way.  To find out what area of your life this eclipse will take place, check where you have 3 degrees Libra or Aries.  Early born Cancers and Capricorns will also feel this one more than most.

The Libra Full Moon will highlight themes of partnership, relationships, marriage and the Arts.  It’s a great time to shine a light on what is and isn’t working with the intimate others in your life, and to find a balance so everyone feels they are getting their needs met.  If you are not in a relationship, and are looking for love, maybe the time is ripe to examine why you’ve been “looking for love in all the wrong places”.  You deserve nothing less than an emotionally available equal that you love to hang out with, and who loves to hang out with you.  Are you in love with the feeling of being “in love”? Are you a sucker for the romantic story? Does the star crossed lovers scenario make you long for that unattainable person even more?  Do you keep finding yourself in the same kind of go nowhere romantic situations that leave you feeling depleted?  Get clear about your love patterns and make a list of what kind of qualities you would like to attract instead.  You need to love yourself first! It’s true. And if you are feeling a bit low in that department, then spend some time cultivating some solid self-love before you go out there again.

Blessings on your Quest!
