In her book, In Awe of Being Human: A Doctor's Stories from the Edge of Life and Death, Dr. Betsy MacGregor relates gripping stories from three decades of experience working as a physician in a major urban hospital. Her accounts of events in the emergency room, in the delivery room, on the hospital wards and at hospice bedsides not only give audiences an intimate and uplifting view of the way that ordinary people step forward to meet extraordinary challenges, but also shed light on the soul-stretching experiences that doctors undergo as they seek to help people whose lives are at stake.

Betsy was a senior staff physician at a major hospital in New York, caring for seriously ill children and adults. She directed research on Dying and the Inner Life, studying what people with terminal illness say about the experience of facing death. She is a medical doctor, has a Masters in Neurobiology, lectures widely, and is a co-founder of Enso House, a hospice-home for terminally ill patients and their families.

"In Awe of Being Human is a book of inspiration and renewal. It is impossible to read these beautiful stories without remembering that, at its core, medicine is not a work of science but an act of love."

  — Rachel Remen, M.D., Kitchen Table Wisdom

"These luminous stories show how doctors and patients alike step forward to meet the most daunting challenges life can bring, demonstrating beautifully for the rest of us what it means to be human. Read this book--it will nourish your soul!"

Andrew Weil, M.D., Spontaneous Healing

“In Awe of Being Human is a brilliant, inspired work.  It is the view of a physician who can marvel at the spectacular ways the human condition displays itself in health and illness. If you can't have Betsy MacGregor as your doctor, do the next best thing: read her magnificent book.”

Larry Dossey, M.D., The Extraordinary Healing

"This extraordinary book reminds us of the preciousness of life and the mystery of death. Written by a clinician whose humanity shines through every word, Dr. MacGregor gives us a view of living, illness, dying and death remarkable in its hopefulness and wisdom."
Roshi Joan Halifax, Founding Abbot, Upaya Zen Center

"Betsy MacGregor is a doctor who has taken her patients into her heart, sharing with them the wonder, terror and exultation of standing at the edge of being. We can all benefit from her experience."
