Jon Steinman & Jan Degrass speak on revolutionary food co-ops at the frontier of the local and good food movements, and the global impact of these movements.

Steinman and Degrass make a compelling case for how food co-ops, as alternatives to corporate grocery giants, are spurring the creation of delicious local food economies and stronger communities, while changing the global system for the better.

Jon Steinman—author of Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants—recently completed a 130-stop book release tour across the US and Canada. Jon will speak about his book, the role of grocery stores in shaping the future of food, and share his experiences from visiting 130 consumer-owned grocery stores (food co-ops).

Jan DeGrass—author of The Co-op Revolution: Vancouver's search for Food Alternatives—will share perspectives from her book which explores her experiences as a founding member of Collective Resource and Services Workers’ Co-op, one of the first and most successful co-ops in BC, committed to social change, co-operation, and worker ownership.

Jon Steinman is the producer and host of Deconstructing Dinner – the internationally syndicated radio show and podcast and streaming television series. Jon coordinates and curates the annual Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival and was an elected director from 2006-2016 of the Kootenay Co-op – Canada's largest independent retail consumer food co-op, serving as Board President from 2014-2016.

Jan DeGrass is an award winning journalist and author. She lives in Sechelt, BC, where she is the Arts & Entertainment columnist for Coast Reporter and editor of Coast Life magazine. She is the author of several books, including The Co-op Revolution, and her writing has appeared in publications ranging from Canadian Living to Chatelaine.
