Banyen is delighted to sponsor the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) screenings of Leaning Into the Wind: Andy Goldsworthy.

This documentary is the equally stunning follow-up to the great Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time, which was a major audience favourite at VIFF 16 years ago. Director Thomas Riedelsheimer once again teams up with the famous landscape artist, who makes what have been called "collaborations with nature." Goldsworthy works outdoors, using natural materials—including the rain itself—to create sculptures and other works. Most of them will disintegrate, and they’re most often photographed or filmed before—or as—they do so.

Riedelsheimer’s eye for beauty is as strong as his subject’s; here as in the previous work the two make a fabulous team. The movie, shot in pristine high-definition video, takes us from France to San Francisco and many places besides to show us the artist’s masterpieces. Also returning is composer Fred Frith, who provides a score to back the film’s hypnotizing rhythms.

"To watch Leaning Into the Wind is to reckon directly with impermanence and the sanctuary of finding beauty amidst natural indifference… [The film] will inspire anyone who sees it to look for the beauty in every gust, to admire how nature constantly rearranges itself, and us along with it…[T]his is a fascinating reminder that some art wasn’t made to be owned."—David Ehrlich, IndieWire
