Join us for a slideshow discussion and author reading of Nairobi Days by Shelina Shariff-Zia.

Shelina will be exploring the history of Indians in East Africa: how they moved from Gujarat and their expulsion from Uganda in 1972 when many fled to Canada. She discusses how the traditional society was moving away from arranged marriages and women were working outside the home.

Nairobi Days is a diaspora novel and coming of age story—a celebration of Indian and African culture seen through the eyes of a young woman.

Shelina Shariff-Zia grew up in
Nairobi. She is the fifth generation of an Indian family who migrated to Kenya from Gujarat, India. Shelina worked as a journalist following her studies at Columbia University. She is a Professor at the City University of New York.
