Redolent with visionary art and powerful symbolism, this is the Tarot designed by one of the most controversial occultists of the 20th century. Aleister Crowley, a ceremonial magician and member of the Ordo Templi Orientis (also known as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn), designed this 78 card Tarot deck to include astrological references, Kabbalistic doctrine, and erotic and archetypal symbolism. The cards were painted for Crowley by Lady Frieda Harris. Crowley created this Tarot from the 1781 theory of Court de Gebelin that the 22 Major Arcana cards are the Egyptian Book of Thoth, and the images are to be found on the walls of a secret initiation chamber beneath a sphinx. These images and symbols contain the sum of all hidden knowledge and mystery of the ancient world and were all that was saved from the burning libraries of Alexandria, Egypt. Thoth is the Egyptian god responsible for measuring time, foretelling the future, and the invention of magic. This Tarot seems to be the one that is either loved or hated, so we recommend that you study it carefully.

Neither Crowley nor Harris managed to publish this Tarot deck during their lifetimes. Crowley died in 1947 and Lady Harris died in 1962. The Thoth Tarot deck remained unpublished until 1969.

Books meant to accompany this deck include The Book of Thoth by Aleister Crowley; The Tarot Handbook  by Angeles Arrien, and Tarot: Mirror of the Soul by G. Ziegler.

Publisher’s Description:

The cards were painted by Lady Frieda Harris according to instructions from the occult scholar, Aleister Crowley. The magnificent art deco work contains kabalistic and astrological attributions described in Aleister Crowley’s Book of Thoth. The stunning art deco artwork of the Thoth is rich in Egyptian symbolism. To each of the twenty-two Major Trumps of the tarot is assigned, by tradition, a Hebrew letter and a path on the Tree of Life, as well as an astrological sign, element, or planet. The deck also reflects Crowley’s interest in alchemy and magic. Crowley Thoth Tarot has attracted a worldwide following, both for its striking beauty and for its complex depiction of occult knowledge. Since its initial publication in 1969, the deck has never been out of print. Included with the deck is a booklet of instruction, which contains two essays by Lady Frieda Harris and a commentary by Stuart R. Kaplan.

Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot has been named one of the Top Ten Tarot Decks of All Time by Aeclectic Tarot.
