Banyen's Description:

In his first book, Calming Your Anxious Mind, psychiatrist Jeffrey Brantley showed how to use the principles of mindfulness to manage anxiety and panic and rediscover the joy in living. This follow-up book presents a series of daily meditations you can use to overcoming fear, anxiety, and panic. These easy-to-learn and practice techniques can ease anyone into a regular beneficial mindfulness practice. Daily Meditations for Calming Your Anxious Mind also includes visualizations, affirmations, and activities you can use to deal with anxiety in daily life.

Drawn from the clinical practice of mindfulness-based stress reduction, or MBSR, this method has been successfully learned by thousands of people for more than two decades.

Section One offers daily meditations for relaxing and feeling safe; Section Two: embracing joys and fears; Section Three: calming your anxious mind and body; and Section Four: connecting to the web of life.

Follow your heart

It’s no picnic in the park when you’re in the midst of a full-blown panic attack. The sheer terror of your frantically beating heart is enough to convince you something is seriously wrong. This exercise is about listening to your heart. Your mind might tell you one thing, but what does your heart tell you?

Get yourself in a relaxed position, seated or lying down, and rest your eyes. Let your arms, legs, and body go limp.

Focus your attention on your heart and notice what’s going on. Is it pounding away like a jackhammer? Or it is beating with an unsteady irregular rhythm? Whatever your heart is doing, take a moment to notice what it might be communicating to you.

If your heart could speak, what might it be saying to you? “I’m really stressed out right now. Please pay attention to me. Please help me. I need some nurturing right now. I’m scared and need to know you care about me.” Consider the voice of your heart and open yourself to being a good listener.

Now reflect on ways that you can be more sensitive and caring to the needs of your heart. She’s pounding out her feelings and vulnerabilities to you. Can you offer her compassion and reassurance that you care?

When you listen to the language of your heart, you become more proficient at looking after yourself and calming yourself in the heat of the moment.
