Banyen's Description:

Calling all people to become stewards of the earth, this lovely edition is a heartfelt plea for the planet’s preservation—and makes a beautiful gift. Each statement is presented on a page of its own, faced with a line drawing.

The “Declaration of Interdependence”—both an enlightening creed and a passionate call to action—was composed by David Suzuki and a team of activists and environmentalists in 1992, in recognition of the United Nations’ Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This statement of environmental principles progresses through three stages: “This We Know,” “This We Believe,” and “This We Resolve.”

We are the earth, through the plants and animals that nourish us.

We are the rains and the oceans that flow through our veins...

We humans are but one of thirty million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world…

We are one brief generation in the long march of time; the future is not ours to erase.

So where knowledge is limited, we will remember all those who will walk after us, and err on the side of caution…

At this turning point in our relationship with Earth, we work for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity to interdependence.

In his afterword, David Suzuki writes:

We knew we needed different perspectives and expertise, so we invited others to contribute. We asked Guujaaw, who had opened my eyes to a new way of seeing. We engaged Raffi, the internationally renowned children’s singer, who provided critical elements with a child’s perspective in mind. We brought in Wade Davis, an eminent ethnobotanist whose profound writing grows out of vast experience with indigenous peoples around the world. They each provided invaluable wisdom.

In this exquisitely designed edition—produced to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the David Suzuki Foundation—artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas brings this powerful creed to life using imagery from cultures around the world, interpreted in his dynamic Haida Manga style.

The declaration is followed by an inspiring essay by David Suzuki. An epilogue by Tara Cullis, president and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation, reveals the history and achievements of the foundation, one of North America’s most active and successful environmental organizations.
