Banyen's Description:

Here the author of The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram shows how the ancient and muliti-dimensional nine-pointed symbol elucidates the most intractable pitfalls of our psyches and, through our understanding them, can lead us to our highest virtues.

The Enneagram of Passions and Virtues illuminates human experience beyond the functions of the personality. In the tradition of the enneagram, the Virtues are said to be the affective atmosphere that replaces the compulsive and reactive emotional patterns—called the Passions—as one becomes freer of the ego.

Maitri, a longtime student and teacher of A.H. Almaas’s Diamond Approach, shows how the shift in our consciousness, or soul, from being fixated by the Passions to expressing the Virtues, is one of the hallmarks of inner development.

We will see how the felt sense or texture of our inner atmosphere gradually changes as we evolve, how the passions give way to the virtues as flavors of our inner life, and how this shift is reflected in our changing attitudes and feeling tone.

The passions are the ego-driven emotional states that come to dominate our lives, such as anger, pride, and fear. Discovering and understanding the passions in an experiential way can lead us to what lies beyond the personality itself. As we do, the virtues—which include serenity, humility, and courage—naturally arise to support our unfoldment.

Maitri is one of the most in-depth writers and teachers on the uses of the enneagram as a tool of inner development. She was a member of the first group of students (in 1970) to whom the Chilean psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo presented the enneagram system. In The Enneagram of Passions and Virtues she provides what can be for some an entry into inner work, and for others, who have been engaged in the journey for a longer time, a uniquely incisive explication of the often unspoken stumbling blocks they inevitably have encountered, with guidance toward their resolution.

"The Enneagram of Passions and Virtues" illuminates human experience beyond the functions of personality. Using the spiritual psychology of the enneagram, Sandra Maitri highlights two core aspects of human consciousness: the passions and the virtues. The passions are the ego-driven emotional states that come to dominate our lives, such as anger, pride, and fear. Discovering and understanding the passions in an experiential way can lead us to what lies beyond the personality itself. As we do, the virtues-which include serenity, humility, and courage-naturally arise to support our unfoldment. This giving way from the passions to the virtues is one of the hallmarks of inner development. How the mysterious nine-pointed symbol of the enneagram illuminates the worst pitfalls and highest virtues of our psyches.
