Banyen's Description:

In The Hidden Gospel, Neil Douglas-Klotz, author of Prayers of the Cosmos, delves into early New Testament scriptures written in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and his followers. Overlooked for centuries by all but a small minority of the world’s Christians, these sacred texts reveal a very different Christ, long shrouded by the veils of language and time—and a hopeful, nurturing, and very contemporary spiritual message.

My purpose is to build bridges of meaning that can help connect the lovers and devotees of Jesus of all traditions, as well as all who have been inspired by his words and example.

This is a native Middle-Eastern Christ who arose from the same earth as have the traditions of Judaism and Islam—“a fact in whose recognition lies the power to overcome centuries of mistrust and tragedy.” Through his passionate scholarship, Douglas-Klotz (a leader in the international Sufi movement) builds remarkable bridges of meaning, reviving the teachings of Jesus as we have never heard them before—with meditations to interpret and reflect on these words just as the early Christians did.

An Inner Shalom

Return to a quiet place of breathing awareness, feeling the word shalom or shalama riding on the inhalation and exhalation. With this feeling and word, feel the presence of Hokhmah, Holy Wisdom, and greet each aspect of your inner self that you meet. As much as possible, allow each one to participate in feeling the mysterious origins of the universe. Invite each aspect of self to a table of bread and wine that can fulfill the ultimate desire of each to bring its purpose into being. As you end the meditation, look into the days immediately ahead of you. In what ways can this greeting and invitation enter your interactions with everyone and everything you meet?

Interspersed with the commentary and renderings of Jesus’ words are examples of simple “body prayers” or meditations inspired by the themes, using traditional Middle Eastern prayer methods such as sounded words, contemplation, breathing awareness, and body awareness.

Publisher’s Description:

In "The Hidden Gospel, " Douglas-Klotz employs this approach to decode the spiritual and prophetic messages hidden within key words and concepts in the sayings and stories of Jesus. We learn to our delight, for instance, that when Jesus spoke of "goodness" he used a word which in Aramaic means "ripe" and refers to actions which are in time and tune with the Sacred Unity of all life. "The Hidden Gospel "aims to bridge the gap between the historical Jesus of the scholar and the Jesus of faith of Christian believers. It will appeal to everyone looking for an alternative spiritual vision of Jesus and his message.
