Banyen's Description:

Filmmaker John Bush travels through the luminous Buddhist cultures of Southeast Asia & Tibet and with an artist's point of view shares the truth, beauty and spiritual power of these legendary places.

Yatra is the Sanskrit word for pilgrimage or spiritual journey. These visually stunning documentaries are cinematic pilgrimages to legendary places in Southeast Asia and Tibet, including the spiritual wonders of Laos, Thailand, Burma, Bali, Cambodia, Java, and Central Tibet.

The living presence of place is the primary focus of these three lyrical films which are meditations themselves. Their deliberate pacing, unobtrusive narration, indigenous music, and harmonic chants are designed to induce an inner journey while traveling to these legendary places. Viewers are invited to relax and let the experience wash over them, making the trilogy part of their own journey.

The first DVD, Dharma River, visits the legendary lost civilizations and living wisdom traditions of Laos, Thailand, and Burma, Ancient temples, mystical landscapes, and wondrous shrines—many of them UNESCO world heritage sites—combined with a score of rare classical South East Asian music masterfully illuminates the areas' artistic and devotional traditions. From the canals of Bangkok to the mountains of Laos, from the golden pagodas of Burma to the Mekong River... a unique experience of sacred space.

The second DVD is Prajna Earth, a stunning journey to the legendary temples of Angkor in Cambodia, the spiritual sites of Bali and the marvel of Buddhist Borobudur in Java. Prajna Earth is a pilgrimage to sacred intersections where Buddhism meets its sources—the Hindu wisdom traditions and the animist worship of nature.

The third DVD, Vajra Sky Over Tibet, is a cinematic pilgrimage offering a direct experience of some of the most revered temples, monasteries, and festivals still surviving. This colorful journey unfolds within the magnificent Himalayan terrain. Vajra Sky bears witness to the profound devotion, spiritual power and enduring faith within today’s endangered Tibetan Buddhist community and the imminent threat to its very survival. The vastness of the Tibetan sky reflecting snow mountains, rushing rivers, and turquoise lakes, leads the journey westward to the holy sites of Shigatse and Gyantse. One discovers an abundance of revered paintings and sculpture within its original context. Returning to Lhasa, pilgrims circumambulate in front of the legendary Jokhang Temple. Luminous faces of faith glow in the flicker of butter lamp offerings within its many shrines including that of the most revered image in Tibet—The Jowo Buddha.

"John Bush's work is eye-opening and essential if you have an interest in Eastern spirituality." —Ty Burr, Film Critic, Boston Globe
