Banyen's Description:

We work with what we are given. That’s the real garden…  Working in my garden I find it a place that mirrors for me the dark and the light of my mind.

This lyrical primer on the spirituality of gardening reflects on the relationship between a gardener and his or her garden. Meditating upon how interaction with the earth opens the heart, schools the mind, engages the body, and embraces the soul—in a “whirled” of increasing estrangement from the natural realm—this book affirms a garden as a soulful space where people can take root and experience the changing seasons and the enduring cycle of renewal. Filled with the joy of living, and following a whole year in the garden, The Mystic Garden will speak to those who yearn to find the holy in the place they call home.

To have a garden, even a small one, is a great privilege. Working with soil, with seeds and plants I find I must live a different kind of time. Growth, both inner and outer, has its own rhythm, and if I am to really be present I must be with organic time, with seasonal changes, with weather and waiting, with hard work and trust, and with disappointment and surrender. I know in the end that while I garden I am the one who will be cultivated. It will be my inner soil that will be worked. I will be the one pruned and weeded. If there is any integration, peace, and fruitfulness, it will come by grace.
