Banyen's Description:

Here is Buddhism with a tender and human face indeed: a rich caravan of teachings from a much-respected teacher of meditation. This book is one of the most popular in the store, which speaks well of the many of us who desire to bring our spirituality to flower each day.

Filled with practical techniques, seasoned teaching tales, lovely and effective guided meditations, knowing wit, and savvy reflections in the tradition of good dharma talks, A Path with Heart is just a fine helping hand through the obstacles and trials of spiritual and contemporary life. Reading it will touch your heart.

Having a map and directions from spiritual books and texts is not enough. We do not know where our spiritual life will lead us, but it always requires us to go into that which is difficult and unknown. Those who attempt to practice alone are almost inevitably more confused or lacking in spiritual depth than those who have practiced under a skillful teacher.

It is a basic principle of spiritual life that we learn the deepest things in unknown territory. Often it is when we feel most confused inwardly and are in the midst of our greatest difficulties that something new will open. We awaken most easily to the mystery of life through our weakest side. The areas of our greatest strength, where we are the most competent and clearest, tend to keep us away from the mystery. To go into this territory beyond our own self, to enter these realms without a guide, can be like trying to lift ourselves by our own bootstraps.

When awareness truly investigates our contractions, we open. Underlying each area of contraction we will find ease and space. This space can be felt quite physically in the body, as a progressive opening of sensations until the sense of bodily solidity dissolves. It can be felt in the heart as an open compassionate acceptance, and in the mind as a clear space of awareness that contains all things. In this space we discover our true nature.

When we are not contracted, the space of our body and mind is naturally filled with qualities that reflect its wholeness. We experience well-being, joy, clarity, wisdom, and confidence—the jewel-like properties of clear consciousness. Each time we open beyond our contracted and fearful states, we will come to this.

Among Jack Kornfield’s other books are After the Ecstasy, the Laundry and Buddha’s Little Instruction Book.
